Stranded in Sharpness (1)

Posted by indigodream on 5 September, 2008

Ok, ok, I know the title’s a bit dramatic – we’re not really stuck – we could cruise as far as Gloucester if we wanted! The incessant rain has closed the Severn so we’re limited to the Gloucester and Sharpness canal until the water goes down.

Now, I do make a huge effort not to whinge on the blog but when I saw that even Caxton’s sunny disposition had been clouded by the rain I thought I’d give vent for a bit. Don’t worry, it won’t last – my glass is generally half full and where it’s empty it’s because I’ve enjoyed a good drink! And actually it’s not a huge effort to be positive as the good bits in 1 hour’s cruising generally outweigh minor gripes from several days (other than the weather).

We’d planned to take 10 days off for an autumn cruise starting from Sunday but with the river closed we’re not likely to get away until Monday at the earliest. We’ll be keeping in touch with the Gloucester lock keepers (Tel: 01452 310832) – they seem to be the most reliable source of information about river conditions. We’ll probably move up to Gloucester if there’s room at the docks so that we’re ready to make a run for it when river conditions allow. We just need a few dry days to get up the Severn then up the Avon to Stratford. Then, at least, we’ve got the option of getting back to base via canal.

We’ve not been able to find a find any web-based information on the state of the Severn and Avon (for boaters). The environment agency flood information doesn’t seem to include the risk of being swept over weirs etc! Has anyone out in blog-land come across any good sources?

It seems ironic now – back in June we turned onto the canals because the Thames was in flood. Never mind, we thought, we ALWAYS have good autumn weather so we’ll come back on the river. Now we’re wondering whether we’ll need to stick to the canals on the way back as well!

It’s not fair! Metcheck’s front page had a nice line this morning: “If you’re just waking up we recommend you don’t open the curtains, it’s not pretty out there!… ” I’ve been rather complacently assuming that we’ll have an indian summer. We always cruise at the beginning of September (that’s when we had our main share on the Dragonfly) and we’ve always had spectacularly good weather. It doesn’t look as if that’s going to happen this year. Who moved that bloody jetstream and when are they going to put it back?! 🙂

Wot, no dog report? How is my extended greyhound family – behaving themselves I trust? Have a good cruise – our planned getaway has turned into a stayathome. Bloody work – whose stupid invention was it?

I’m afraid that the dogs don’t get out of bed before midday (1pm on a Sunday) but be assured of their full consideration when they emerge from the duvets!
