BCN Marathon Challenge 2011: Photoblog 2

Posted by indigodream on 2 June, 2011

1.35pm: View from the Wyrley and Essington Canal...

1.38pm: Traveller's ponies - a common sight on 'rural' canals....

1.43pm: Hot competition - nb Muskrat - winners of the last challenge in 2009!

1.44pm: The skipper of nb Muskrat - respect - they got an extraordinary number of points on the last challenge and whilst they say that they did not do that well this time ...

1.49pm: View from the Wyrley and Essington Canal...

1.45pm: It's not all countryside....

2.08pm: There is some housing around - mainly neat redbrick houses, so this block of flats really stood out.....

2.10pm: View from the Wyrley and Essington Canal.... This canal is terribly underused but it is well worth visiting.

2.17pm: Bet you didn't expect cows in Birmingham....

1.27pm: Approaching Pelsall junction...

2.34pm: Cannock Extension Canal - straight and scenic - good place to walk the dogs....

3.22pm: Pub at Pelsall Junction with fellow competitors nb Mr Toad presumably having their 6 hour rest break early......

3.54pm: Civilisation just past Pelsall Junction....

3.56pm: nb Rosie moored near Tesco - not sure if they were on the challenge...

4.03pm: Looking back towards Rushall Junction....

4.19pm: Pterodactyls? Probably herons - they do look prehistoric in the air....

4.22pm: 'fisherman' - great sculpture by Walsall Wood Bridge....

4.27pm: These new developments may be a little bland but they're a lot better than the previous dereliction and give the canal a 'safe' feel....

4.32pm: The basin at Daw End - it's much more swanky than we remember!

4.33pm: Daw End Visitor mooring - they're offside and presumably that gate can be locked - they're only 24-hour and they were unoccupied when we passed...

4.37pm: Sweeping views into the deep quarry on the Daw End branch and the far vista of the Birmingham plateau..

5.06pm: nb Yeoford and it's youthful crew, including James and Amy from nb Lucky Duck...

5.06pm: Close up of nb Yeoford with Amy from nb Lucky Duck (seated) - their crew was very chirpy considering they'd been cruising for around 11 hours at this point (they started early to get to their starting position)....

5.31pm: It was great to have five potential helms- men and women on board - swapping over regularly meant we could all have a rest to recharge our batteries as the day drew on.....

5.46pm: Another merry greeting this time from the Cat who Walks by Himself, author of the ultimate planning tool for this challenge.

5.58pm: Fancy dress at Rushall top lock - apparently they weren't from the Longwood Boat Club.....or so they say.....

6.20pm: Serious business - the crew of this little boat (aaargh didn't catch their name either) were deep in discussion - a common syndrome on the BCN challenge where tactics are discussed hourly 🙂

6.48pm: View up the Rushall flight - it's an attractive stretch....

7.14pm: The canine crew were flat out by now - after 11 hours cruising Graham finally got used to tiptoeing round prone greyhounds on deck. Sarah says that if we build Indigo Dream 2 then we MUST have a bigger back deck. We've got 9' now - what do you say - another 4 feet maybe?
